In a game we thought might be on or off due to the weather we were blessed with a lovely warm day. This was Pilgrims 3rd invite to the Horn Fair could it be 3rd time lucky. Ebernoe won the toss and sent the Pilgrims into bat.Craig and Sam opened the batting before sam got done by a goodun with the score on 24.Lawrence joined Craig at the crease and runs started to come steadily until Lawrence(23) fell victim to Jack Whittington with the score on 99 off 21 overs. Simon G joined Craig before Craig (71) got bowled by Stempy. Simon G (17)soon followed being bowled by Stempy. Runs then became hard to find with the later batsmen apart from Paul H (40)who kept the innings looking respectable before he was bowled by returning opener E.Speller with the Pigrims score on 163-7. With tight bowling from Ebernoe, Pilgrims ended up on 189-10 with L.Hopkins the only other Pilgrims batsmen getting into double figures.Rituals followed with both sides following the Roast lamb back to the pavilion with each player cliutching a traditional pint. This was followed by a tremedous roast lamb dinner served and cooked by the ladies from the club. after lunch it was Ebernoes turn to bat chasing our 189 which many thought was not enough. H.Marchant and Jack Whittington opened for Ebernoe with Harry rendell and Simon G opening the bowling for the Pilgrims. Pilgrims got off to a good start with Harry claiming the first wicket H.Marchant in his second over with the score on 17. Runs then came quickly for Ebernoe before they lost their 2nd wicket M.Goodwin being bowled by Paul H in his 2nd over with the score on 67-2 off just 12 overs. In came Stempy to join Jack Whittington but with a change of bowling ( Andy joining Paul H) saw the runs hard to come by before Jack Whittington (51) was clean bowled by Andy Lavender and Ebernoe were now 111-3 off 25 overs.Drew Clark joined Stempy and soon after Leo had Stempy(23) caught by Rendy which was quickly followed by Sam taking a good catch off Leo to dismiss E Spellar soon after. With Ebernoe moving quickly to 149-5 a shrewd change of bowling by Rendy saw Simon G return from the Hogg Roast end. He soon had Drew Clark (34) D.Turner (5) and G.Phillips (0) all back in the pavilion in the space of just 2 overs for 3 runs. With Paul H at the other end claiming 3 wickets as well we soon had Ebernoe 158 all out with the final wicket that of Donna Reed (only the 2nd time a lady had played in the Horn Fair Donna both times). What a great win for the Pilgrims on our 3rd attemp. Not only was it a great win but Craig Dennett claimed the Horns for his score of 71 being the highest score in the winning team. For myself I think it was the best game ive ever played in with the tables swinging from one side to the other through out the day.A big thanks must go to the whole of Ebernoe cricket club and scorers for making this such a great day both off and on the pitch. To all the Ebernoe ladies who cooked the Roast thank you, and a big thanks to the ladies who supplied food all day long for our supporters and everyone else watching. Also a big thanks to the bar staff who kept everyone well watered, and Finally a big thank you to all the support from our families on the day. What a day it was. |
